Alright everyone, at the risk of having to admit my own ignorance I can't stay quiet any more. What the heck is the technique of palmering? I've tried to do a few searches for it, but I can't seem to get it through my skull. What is it specifically, and how do I do it? I've made some jigs up now and I'm seeing results from my experiments, which is good, but I'm wondering if I'm getting the concept right, or the God's just favoring a fool. Please guys help me out.

Palmering is a method of tying on a hackle, or maribou, on the body of a fly, streamer, or jig. The basic method is to attach the tip of the hackle at the rear of the hook, typically at the bend. Then tie on any body material and wrap the hackle over the body material to the eye of the hook. a pattern to look at to see the technique is a woolly bugger.

Ok that makes total sense and my guess was right. Thanks very much. Now if I'm right on that to prepare the feather you also strip one side, and then wrap it shiny side forward correct?

I recommend you purchase the DVD entitled "The Art of the Jig" by First Bite Jigs. It certainly helped me !

personally I have never stripped half of the hackle or feather I have just wrapped it on. For dry flies the hackle bars point to the eye of the hook and for wet flies/streamers the hackel barbs point to the bend end of the hook when you are done wrapping. While I have not seen it, the dvd mentioned above would probably give a more on the particulars and techiques.

Thanks for all the help. I've been doing the mad scientist and the results have been good. Thanks to this site I've been averaging a fish each time I've hit the river. Not the monsters othershave been getting elsewhere, but if they are on the end of my line I'm happy. Thanks again for the feedback.
