for stir-crazy chrome seekers...like me.
With a month and a few days to go before I can legally wet a line from my favorite local rock, today I duly noted the USGS readings and then went out to see what the snowmelt was doing to the river.
While I was there, I picked up the dregs from the winter season that Hatchery Guy missed. He does his part, but it must be tough keeping ahead of the litterers. (I don't think the mess was all from fisherpersons. Partying kids (and adults) bring and leave more than their share of trash. Doesn't matter.) Three (small) garbage bags later, I drove home with lots of styrofoam (sand shrimp and worm containers), empty small gear baggies, some hopelessly tangled mono birdsnests, a bunch of glass and aluminum beer and pop cans and bottles and six-pack rings, some pieces of someone's upriver cabin awning, as well as some aluminum flashing and some scrap paper...all of which went into our local dumpster.
When Hatchery Guy thanked me for the task--definitely NOT a requirement--I noted that, since I've never taken a fish out of the river, at least I could pack out stuff so others could enjoy the area. Anyway, trash on access trails and the riverbank won't bug me quite as badly when I make that same trek on June 1. Maybe. The litter will undoubtedly be back.
Why not hit a local riverbank and pick up junk that isn't supposed to be there? Find a legal place to dump it. You'll feel better, and at least you got to see what your zipperlip looks like before the Summer season opens.
Dress to combat budding blackberry and salmon berry vines, take good gloves, as many garbage bags as you want to fill, and one of those manual "grabber arms" to snag stuff if ya' got one.
Just a thought...

I'm a member of another fishing site and we have adopted a section of river to keep clean. I try to stop in on my way by every couple of weeks or so.

Yeah I think that's a GREAT idea! I live on the river, and since I can't walk out the door and fish until June 1st, I can head out with my spare time (what little there is) and clean up during the down time.

It's a great idea that has been going on for a long time with most sportsman, including myself. I picked up countless bags of trash on Chico Creek this past year during the chum run. The problem from what I have seen lies allot in the non-sportsman at least when it comes to trails, roads, and camp grounds. I have also become disgusted with the sportsman of my generation(20-25). Not trying to offend the ones that help do there part part, its the majority that just DONT care.
These are OUR waters and lands, lets take care of them. Thank you all that do help and keep it up. I really would hope that nobody on a site like this would leave their trash just laying around for someone else to pick up that is just pure laziness.
I wish bent rods to all that help in the cause, and rods slammed to car doors to those who don't.

Last night my 5yr old and 3yr old helped me Ranger Rick* 4 bags of trash from our new adopted home lake in the Oly area. The kids said it is all clean for more people to litter, but that we would pick it up again. I tried instilling in them the hope that because it is so clean, folks would not litter. Heres hoping...
*Ranger Rick - Latin verb, to pick up trash along waterways. (according to 5 yr old)

6. Fly fishing is particularly challenging for the unaccomplished, and has in the past resulted in pierced nipples and worse. We recommend that this is first attempted wearing protective clothing, which should only be removed once the basic technique has been mastered. Which one of you was this?!? |

I'll be sure to keep a few trash bags on me when i fish my local stream, one for garbage, another for any hatchery fish I hope to encounter.  Great topic, hopefully everyone here can do their part, it is a step towards keeping our rivers and environment cleaner  |
