I agree with DR on the baitcaster.  I changed a couple months ago from almost always using a spinning reel for float fishing.  Once you find a reel that lets the line off (currado SF is great), I find that my casting accuracy has improved.  I can thumb that baby right into the pocket if need be and you can zip it under the trees really fast and and thumb it to a quick stop when necessary.  I noticed recently, with bmac on the sticks, that I was hitting most my spots.  I think I was OK on the spinning reel but now that I use braid for my float fishing, I find that stuff comes off the spinning reel a little too fast, if you know what I mean. There are a few kinds of steelhead fishing; fly, float, drift, spoon, spinner, plugs, boondoggin, bobberdoggin,.... and then there is float fishing in 18\" of water.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Afro

zonker, we use that super braid knot for sturgeon too, have never had it break at the knot. Granted you have to carry a tool, but small price to pay for confidence.

After the sportsman show, I came home with a tiemaster tool.  I talked with the powerpro rep, and asked him what knots he used for joining braid to mono.  He showed me the knot and I was impressed.  I call it a double uni with a lock.  I hooked up with Fish, and we did a little knot testing.  My crude results are as follows

20# powerpro I will only use 12# leader material or lighter.  The braid broke most of the time when we used 15# maxima.

30# powerpro works well with 15# leader.  The leader broke most of the time.

We tried joining the leaded with a double uni and swivel with a clinch, and improced clinch.  The double uni never broke, and either the leader broke or the clinch knot broke.

On our trip to the Hoh, I tried using the double uni knot, then the uni knot on the swivel, and either a duncan loop, or a

I use a double looped uni for tying a swivel or duosnap on. When joining braid to a like sized piece of mono I use a double Uni. When joining braid and a mono of a thicker diameter I use a Carlyle knot. It's down right bullet proof. Braid knots are a pain to tie, but once learned they are pretty easy stuff.

I have never had my braid break before a leader did, no matter what size I was using. The only time I've broken braid is when either the float or the swivel/lead becomes stuck like Chuck.  Afro

15lb maxima probably has a realistic breaking strength of 20lb test, since you're bored might want to run some tests and let us know Wink
Because mono to power pro i always break it at the mono, unless the braid is Old or, gets  stuck like chuck, as shane stated

hey red did you get the fish at my spot? probably the same river right Wink

Nice little chromer you're holding there BC Steel!

Are you BC guys buying into the jig thing hardcore, or is it still a "zipper" technique?

Its becoming more main stream all the time. Probably not to many guys tossing them for the majority of the time but a lot of guys have at least a few with them.

I had to work hard to get that fish. 7 trips in 12 days to finally connect  Tongue Ah well, it made the victory that much sweeter.
