The weight of the actual float is almost nothing. After all, they're just light foam.

The weight is added to the line beneath the float. This, along with your jig should "balance" the float where it sticks out of the water far enough to follow it with your eyesight. Once you get underway you'll know just how long to cut the backer rod to have a float to balance 5/8 oz, 1/2 oz, 3/8 oz, 1/4 oz. Smaller than that I use either corks or #2 foam cheaters.
